History

  • 1951 Inauguration of the Department of Mathematics, inititially within the College of Education. Establishment of the master’s degree graduate program in Mathematics 1962 Change in affiliation from the College of Education to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • 1982 The College of Natural Sciences branches out from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Doctorate degree graduate program in Mathematics established. To date, the Department of Mathematics produced 2196 Bachelor’s degree, 290 Master’s degree, and 20 doctorate degree graduates

Education Purpose and Goals

A new era of information technology is dawning in today's world and, in such an environment, the role of advanced mathematics is constantly assuming greater importance, creating new indispensible tools for applied science and engineering such as medical science, biological science, financial science, and nanotechnology. Therefore, The Department of Mathematics educates and conducts research in the major areas of mathematicsaccording to the needs of the times. We also seek to produce a new generation of female scientists, who will lead Natural Sciences and the related technologies nationally and internationally.

  1. The Department of Mathematics aims to raise logical reasoning by providing education in basic areas of mathematics such as analysis, algebra, geometry, and logic.
  2. The Department of Mathematics plans to produce outstanding students who can understand that mathematics is indispensable and tied to the physical sciences and technology.
  3. Outstanding students who want to explore Mathematics more scientifically and academically can enter the graduate school receive personal training
  4. After completing teaching course requirements, students can teach Mathematics in middle schools or a high schools after graduation. Also, students can utilize their mathematical ability in more applied science and engineering such as mechanical, electronic, chemical, and structural engineering, computer science.

Introduction

Mathematics, which deals with numbers, logical reasoning, spaces, and relations, is interesting and beautiful in its own right. Owing to its rigorous theories leaving no room for gaps in logic, mathematics also is serves as a basic fundamental tool necessary to understand certain natural phenomenon.

Mathematics can be classified into two fields: basic mathematics and advanced mathematics. Basic mathematics provides basic field of reasoning for natural science including functional analysis, algebraic number theory and analytic number theory, topology, and algebra. Applied mathematics creates new tools for applied science and engineering such as electronic, chemical, computer science, medical science, and economics, which can be utilized in more practical fields such as finance, industrial research laboratories, and educational institutes. Modern mathematics now integrates basic and applied mathematics. A new era of information technology has emerged in today's world and, in such an environment, the role of integrated mathematics is constantly assuming greater importance.
